Marlow Jazz Club – Nat Steele Quintet

Nat Steele is probably the most in demand vibes player in the UK. His biggest influence has been Milt Jackson, the leader of The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ), one of the most important and influential jazz groups ever. Nat has most recently headlined together with Scott Hamilton in particular celebrating the music of the MJQ.

His quintet features a very special musician – the guitarist Jim Mullen. Jim really needs no introduction to jazz fans as he is one of the leading jazz guitarists in the country. He is truly a master of his art and is best known for the brilliant Morrissey-Mullen band that he led with saxophonist Dick Morrissey. Both had performed with the Average White Band. Every jazz guitarist owes a debt to the brilliant Wes Montgomery and Jim is no exception, citing Wes as perhaps his biggest influence.

Given their pedigree and influence, it is not surprising that the theme of the gig is the meeting of Milt Jackson (nicknamed ‘Bags’) and Wes Montgomery, their music and stories. So ‘Bags Meets Wes!’ – the name of their famous album together in 1962 – is the theme for the show.

Nat and Jim will be supported by a rhythm section that includes the very best on the UK jazz scene…

Sean Fyfe a brilliant young Canadian pianist now resident in London; Simon Read, supremely gifted double bass player also from London; and Steve Brown the UK’s first call drummer from just down the road.

We have said it before, but we’ll say it again – it doesn’t get much better than this! It is going to be an exceptional night of music so don’t miss out. Please join us if you can at the acoustically excellent Barn Club next Tuesday.
